Located 24 miles northwest of Downtown Houston, Cypress is one of Houston’s largest suburban communities. The area around present-day Cypress was once populated by the Atakapa and Akokisa Indian tribes. The tribes disappeared after the appearance of German settlers in the 1840s. Up until the large scale residential and commercial development of the early 1990’s Cypress was a rural area. Cypress is often referred to as Cy-Fair or Cypress-Fairbanks, which comes from when the Big Cypress School and Fairbanks High School combined in the 1930s to form the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District.
